Crack repairs

Cracks in the plaster or pool shell can cause significant water loss, and lead to costly damage to property when not addressed.

Crack Repairs and types of cracks

Pool cracks can be as short as 12" and can lead to significant water loss.  Additionally, when left unattended, cracks will spread and can create significantly more damage and increased cost.  The earlier a crack is addressed, the less damage it can lead to.
There are a number of different types of cracks.  Each type of crack is repaired slightly differently, however, the main goal is relieve the tension that caused the crack.  By simply filling in the crack, that tension is not relieved, and the crack will reappear.

1) WAll Crack / Floor Crack

Wall cracks appear either vertically or horizontally on the pool walls and can extend onto the floor.  There are several different processes used including epoxies, filling in the cracks, and various injections.  However, none of these address the tension that caused the crack in the first place.

Typically we address these cracks by:
  • break out the plaster around the crack approximately 18"-24" wide (see picture below)
  • break out gunite (concrete) all the way down to the dirt behind to relieve tension
  • repair damaged rebar
  • build up rebar around affected area
  • backfill opening with concrete
  • plaster or pebble patch over new concrete

2) Seat Cracks

A slightly different type of crack is one often found in spa seats, and pool steps.  When the plaster or pebble gets old it wears out and allows water to get below to the gunite.  Once this happens the water erodes the gunite leaving hollow spots.  These hollow spots crack easily and begin to spread.

As with wall cracks, there are a number of ways to repair these using epoxies and injections.  However, these topical repairs will stop the leak but do not address the reason they cracked.  By breaking out the damaged areas, we can stop the crack from spreading and reappearing.

Typically we repair this by:
  • break out damaged plaster or pebble
  • break out damaged gunite
  • allow structure to dry
  • repair damaged area with concrete
  • plaster or pebble patch over repair
